In summer, my conscience always battles between choosing the air-conditioner for cool, comfortable spaces or the fan, which keeps me cool to a certain degree. I'm sure many have faced that dilemma. Here's a breakdown of what it actually costs in energy terms. You can easily convert that for your bills as a comparison:
1 typical desktop fan power output = 50W
Electricity use in one hour = 50W * 1h = 50Wh = 0.05 kWh
1 typical Air conditioner power output = 2.4kW = 2400W
Electricity use in one hour = 2400 W * 1h = 2400Wh = 2.4kWh
Ratio of hours of operation of a desktop fan for every hour
of an air-conditioner running = 2.4kWh/0.05kWh = 48 : 1
In short, if an air-conditioner runs at full power constantly for 1 hour, its the equivalent of running a fan for 48 hours!! 2 FULL DAYS!!!
Have a think about whether you really need the air-conditioner, eh?
